Commentary:
Subject: "Some Suburbs Losing Out to Downtown" Date: Tuesday, September 29, 1998 While the long overdue resurgence of downtowns as residential locations in the United States is certainly to be applauded, this article engaged in hype well beyond reality. The fact is that the projected downtown population increases are a mere fraction of the suburban growth in the same communities. For example, downtown Denver's 166 percent projected increase over the next 12 years is equal to less that two months worth of suburban growth in Denver. Even in slow growing Chicago, the downtown growth to 2010 barely exceeds six months of suburban growth. By no means are the suburbs losing out to downtown.
Sincerely
