US Federal Employees Paid 75% More than Private

In 1996 the average US federal government non-military employee was compensated $65,400 --- 74.6 percent more than the average private employee (compensation includes wages, salaries and employer paid benefits), at $37,500.

It is estimated that federal government employees are compensated higher than private employees in comparable positions.

State & Local Govt. Workers Paid More than Private

In 1996 the average US state and local government employee was paid $42,700 in wages and benefits --- 13.9 percent more than the average private employee, at $37,500.

It is estimated that state and local government employees are compensated higher than private employees in comparable positions



US Government Employees More Secure than Private

During 1996 and the first half of 1997, the chances of a US private employee being laid off in a "mass layoff" (more than 50 employees) was 2.8 times that of government employees.



US Law: 6 Yrs. Severance to Transit Employees

Section 13(c) of the US Federal Transit Act requires that transit agencies pay up to six years severance pay to any employee laid off due to an efficiency or economy.
