China Ranks Second in Motorway Length

The People's Republic of China had constructed 24,474 kilometers of motorway (four or more lanes, fully access controlled) by 1997, ranking second only to the United States (91,541). China now has more than double the motorway length of third ranked Germany and fourth ranked France. China is in the process of building a 35,000 kilometer comprehensive national system of toll motorways that will reach virtually all major cities from the far western province of Zingiang to central and eastern China.

In addition to the toll network, China has constructed and is continuing to construct an extensive free urban motorway system in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. Construction is now underway on the outer ring motorway of Shanghai and approximately one-half of the Beijing fourth ring has been completed (2001).
