Long Distance Trains Operate at
Profit in Australia:
No Subsidy for Indian Pacific,
Ghan and Overland

Three of Australia's premier long distance intercity passenger trains are now operated without subsidy by the Great Southern Railway.
  • The Indian Pacific operates twice weekly over a 2,700 mile route from Sydney through Adelaide to Perth.

  • The Ghan operates a weekly service from Sydney through Adelaide to Alice Springs (2,000 miles) and a second weekly service from Melbourne through Adelaide to Alice Springs (1,500 miles). Theses services operated only from Adelaide to Alice Springs before privatization.

  • The Overland operates a five day per week overnight service between Melbourne and Alice Springs.

Each of these services were previously operated by Australian National Railways and were subsidized.

Motorail service (transport of automobiles for passengers) is also avalable on each of these routes.
