Falls to 95 Year Low

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Data released 30 January 1998 by the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that US private sector trade union membership (1997) has dropped to 9.8 percent of private non-agricultural employment.

  • The 1997 market share represents a 3.92% market share loss from 1997 --- the second worst annual decline in the last decade

  • Private sector union membership was last below 9.8 percent in 1902, when it was 9.3 percent.

  • The total number of private sector union members fell to its lowest point in 56 years --- 9.4 million members. Membership was 8.3 million in 1941
