Private School Vouchers Endorsed by The Christian Science Monitor
NEWS BRIEF
In a 23 July 1996 editorial entitled "FOR BETTER SCHOOLS,"
The Christian Science Monitor
endorsed publicly financed vouchers to pay for educating students in secular private schools.
The Monitor observed that:
In some large cities, the schools have become captives of political patronage, corruption, and union
featherbedding.
The Monitor noted anticipated impact of competition in education, including:
... a far more effective use of the huge amount of money already geing poured into
public schools with insufficient results.
The Monitor also proposed "an end to most federal mandates and to the
Department of Education
