NEW JERSEY PRIVATE CARRIERS:AMONG LARGEST U.S. URBAN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
New Jersey's private transit companies constitute one of the largest urban transport systems in the United States: Approximately 1,250 buses are operated under contract to New Jersey Transit. This is more buses than are operated by most US public transit systems, including Boston and San Francisco.Unlike virtually all major U.S. urban transport systems, the New Jersey private companies operate with minimal operating subsidies (less than three percent). The U.S. urban transport systems with the highest operating ratios are Westchester County (NY), Long Island Bus (NY), San Diego, and New York City, respectively. The New Jersey private operating ratio of 97 percent is considerably greater than these systems, which range from 50 to 62 percent. Some of the buses used by the New Jersey private operators are provided by New Jersey Transit, while others are funded commercially by the operators. Thus, with respect to capital subsidies, the New Jersey private operators are partially subsidized (by comparison, virtually all US public transit capital is 100 percent subsidized).
